Our online Master of Education degree is intended for educators who have previously earned a bachelor’s degree and hold a valid teaching certificate. See below for more admission details, then choose your start date and apply.

Degree and Minimum GPAApplicants must have a bachelor’s degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA.
TranscriptsOfficial transcripts showing all post-secondary coursework attempted and the award of the baccalaureate or higher degree by an accredited college or university.
Transfer CreditsA maximum of 12 credit hours from a regionally accredited institution, or nine credit hours if part of a master’s degree at the other institution, may be considered.
Official Test Score(s)If an applicant’s undergraduate GPA is less than 3.0, they must submit MAT or GRE scores.

  • Valid teaching certificate
  • One-to-two-page personal statement describing your academic and/or other interests
  • Three letters of recommendation using forms sent after you apply

International Students

All international students must demonstrate English language proficiency for admission. If you do not meet the English proficiency requirement, you may be admitted conditionally.

  • Submit official school records (transcripts, diplomas or certificates of study) translated to English

Faculty Spotlight: Dr. Sharda Jackson Smith

Dr. Jackson Smith joined USC Upstate in 2018 and has held several leadership roles including Director of Curriculum and Associate Dean throughout her tenure. Dr. Jackson has taught in K–12 schools in Florida, where she worked across grade levels and was honored as Teacher of the Year.

Her scholarship centers on education finance, teacher compensation, and educational equity. She has published in respected outlets such as the Journal of Education Finance and Journal of Education Human Resources.

Dr. Jackson Smith is also deeply engaged in public scholarship and service: she has presented on educational policy issues, written for the League of Women Voters, and serves on multiple boards including the National Education Finance Academy and the South Carolina League of Women Voters.
